Creating a Culture of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in Government

Creating a Culture of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Government

Description:

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and tools to create a vibrant culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) at work. During this two-day course, you will review the research demonstrating that a respectful and safe workplace makes good business and financial sense. You will identify the root causes of inequities that persist in most organizations that limit your ability to access the full capabilities and talents of a diverse workforce. You will explore what implicit (or hidden) bias is and how it impacts most interactions among your colleagues and teams. You will learn about specific steps that you, as a leader, can take to uncover and reduce such bias among your teams. You will compare diversity and inclusion and how to apply specific leadership skills that foster equity as well as diversity. You will review the protected classes that federal law has established to prevent discrimination. You will learn the distinction between equality and equity and the three types of physical disabilities that inhibit true inclusion of these employees. You will learn how to recognize microaggressions and what leadership actions should be taken when recognized. You will practice specific leadership behaviors that eliminate harassment and bullying.

You will learn about the concept of ‘psychological safety’ and why is it the key to creating a safe and respectful culture, and how those qualities can be integrated into daily work interactions. You will learn what core leadership skills create a positive work climate for a diverse workforce. When exploring the concept of organizational accessibility that brings true equity, in-depth survey data provides insight into existing hiring, promotion and compensation policies and practices that must be reexamined to bring about sustainable culture change.

Through focused lectures and short relevant videos, supported by real-time exercises of personal assessments and self-reflections, as well as small group interactions among your colleagues, you will experience the benefit of a deepened understanding of these complex leadership challenges. You will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned immediately among your own teams. Armed with new insights and practical skills you will become a more effective, inclusive leader for your diverse workforce, resulting in a higher performing work environment respectful of everyone.
