Paralegal Certificate Course© (LAWS7000S)
The Paralegal Certificate Course© is an intensive on-line program of study that prepares the learner to be successful in the challenging and rewarding field of paralegal work. The Graduate School, in partnership with the Center for Legal Studies, now offers the course that has been used by hundreds of colleges around the country for more than 20 years. The Center for Legal Studies is a member of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and is recognized as a premier provider of paralegal education. The course is now delivered completely on the Internet with interactive communication with a professional faculty member and a group of motivated participants.
The certificate requires successful completion of two demanding seven-week sessions, Paralegal 1 and Paralegal 2. The two sessions cover a vast array of topics and skill areas needed by today's paralegals, including a comprehensive study of the American legal system. In the first session participants learn how to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The second session concentrates on legal principles such as precedence, legal authority, citation, research and advocacy techniques. In addition, there is guidance on obtaining a paralegal position and starting your own freelance paralegal business. Assignments requiring reading, research and writing must be submitted on a weekly basis. Online participants should expect to spend approximately 90 hours preparing assignments and tests for this 14-week course.
Tuition for the certificate covers both sessions. The sessions are usually taken in a single 14-week period; however, it is permissible to complete the second session at a later date provided that both sessions are completed within a one-year period.
