Overview:
Do you have deaf/hard-of-hearing family members, friends, or co-workers with whom you wish to communicate through sign language? This introductory level American Sign Language (ASL) course is designed to teach the basics of the language and culture of deaf Americans. Come learn to listen with your eyes and speak with your hands while also learning fun tips for remembering various ASL vocabulary words and sentence structures. You will be on your way to communicating in the silent world among us!

Objectives:
  • Understand and apply the various components of ASL to the production a basic but clear, manual articulation of the language.
  • Produce varied sentence structures following foundational ASL grammatical rules.
  • Understand the difference between ASL and other variations of signed communication, why those differences are necessary, and when they are appropriate.
  • Recognize and be sensitive to the cultural differences between hearing and deaf/ hard-of-hearing populations.
  • Use receptive skills to comprehend a basic level of ASL.
